Blood culture tests
A blood culture test checks for bacteria or fungi in your blood that could cause infections. During the test, a small amount of blood is taken from a vein and placed in special bottles containing nutrients that help microbes grow if they are present. The samples are then incubated in the lab for several days. If microorganisms grow, it indicates an infection, helping doctors identify the specific pathogen and choose the most effective treatment. Blood cultures are essential for diagnosing serious infections like sepsis and guiding appropriate antibiotic or antifungal therapy.
