Blood and Marrow Transplantation

Blood and marrow transplantation (BMT) is a medical procedure that replaces damaged or diseased bone marrow with healthy stem cells. The process involves collecting healthy stem cells from a donor or the patient, then administering high-dose chemotherapy or radiation to destroy problematic cells in the body. The healthy stem cells are then infused into the bloodstream, where they migrate to the bone marrow and begin producing new, healthy blood cells. BMT is used to treat certain cancers such as leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma, as well as some non-cancerous blood disorders, offering the potential for a cure or long-term remission.
