Black Land Loss
Black land loss refers to the historical and ongoing reduction of African American-owned farmland, primarily resulting from discriminatory practices, economic challenges, and policies such as discriminatory loans, legal hurdles, and racial violence. Over generations, many Black farmers faced systemic barriers that made it difficult to maintain or pass down land. As a result, a significant portion of land once owned or cultivated by Black families has been lost or sold, leading to economic and cultural impacts. This loss diminishes Black agricultural presence and wealth, highlighting broader issues of racial inequality in land ownership and economic opportunity.
