Bispectral Index (BIS)
The Bispectral Index (BIS) is a monitoring tool used during anesthesia to assess a patient's level of consciousness. It analyzes brain activity signals, obtained through a forehead sensor, and provides a numerical score from 0 to 100. A lower BIS score indicates deeper sedation or anesthesia, while a higher score suggests the patient is more awake. This helps anesthesiologists determine the right amount of anesthesia to keep the patient safely unconscious without over- or under-dosing, ensuring effective sedation and recovery.
