Bishop Estate
Bishop Estate was a large Hawaiian nonprofit organization that managed the land assets once owned by the Bishop family, primarily serving Native Hawaiian beneficiaries, including the Kamehameha Schools. Established to fund education and community programs, it became one of the wealthiest private landholders in Hawaii. Over time, governance issues and financial mismanagement led to public scrutiny and legal reforms. Today, Bishop Estate continues to focus on supporting Native Hawaiian education and cultural initiatives, but its history highlights the importance of transparent management of charitable assets serving indigenous communities.
