Birobidzhan Jewish National District

The Birobidzhan Jewish Autonomous Oblast is a region in Russia established in 1934 as a homeland for Jewish people within the Soviet Union. Located in the Russian Far East near the border with China, it was created to promote Jewish culture and provide a place for Jewish settlement. While it was envisioned as a Jewish national territory, it is predominantly inhabited by ethnic Russians, with a smaller Jewish community. Today, it functions as a unique administrative area promoting Jewish culture and history, though its Jewish population remains relatively small.
