BIP (Balls In Play)

Balls in Play (BIP) refers to any batted ball that results in the batter putting the ball into fair territory and it remaining in play, such as a single, double, or groundout. It excludes strikeouts, walks, or home runs. BIP provides insight into how often fielders are involved in active plays and helps evaluate a player's contact quality. Analytics derived from BIP, like batting average on balls in play (BABIP), can indicate luck or skill, and are useful for assessing player performance and predicting future outcomes.
