Bion's Theory of Groups

Bion's Theory of Groups suggests that groups function not only through task-oriented activity but also through underlying emotional processes. He identified two primary group states: "work" mode, where members focus on goal achievement and rational thinking; and "basic assumption" modes, where unconscious emotions drive behavior—such as dependency, fight, or flight. These emotional states can influence group dynamics, sometimes hindering progress or causing conflict. Bion’s insights help us understand how unspoken feelings and instincts shape group interactions, emphasizing the importance of awareness and management of these underlying emotional currents for effective teamwork.
