Biological Indicator (BI)

A Biological Indicator (BI) is a specialized test used to verify the effectiveness of sterilization processes, such as autoclaving or chemical sterilizers. It contains a known quantity of microorganisms that are highly resistant to the sterilization method being tested. After the sterilization cycle, the BI is examined to see if the microorganisms have been killed. If the microorganisms are eliminated, it confirms the sterilization process was successful. BIs are essential for ensuring that practices in healthcare, laboratories, and sterilization facilities are effective in preventing the spread of infectious agents.
