Bioenergy with CCS (BECCS)
Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) combines renewable biomass energy production with technology that captures and stores carbon dioxide emissions. Plants absorb CO₂ as they grow; when biomass is burned for energy, the CO₂ released is captured before entering the atmosphere. This stored carbon can be kept underground in geological formations, resulting in a net reduction of greenhouse gases. BECCS is considered a negative emissions process, meaning it can help offset emissions from other activities, making it a potentially valuable tool for combating climate change.
