Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) measures the amount of oxygen that microorganisms need to decompose organic waste in water. It indicates water quality; higher BOD means more organic material is present, which can deplete oxygen levels needed by aquatic life. Typically tested over five days, BOD helps assess pollution levels in rivers, lakes, or wastewater. Clean water usually has a low BOD, while polluted water has a high BOD, signaling that treatments may be needed to improve water health and protect ecosystems.
