Bioavailability (oral)

Bioavailability (oral) refers to the proportion of a drug or substance that, after being taken by mouth, enters the bloodstream and is available to have an effect. It measures how efficiently the body absorbs the medication from the digestive system. For example, if you take a pill, not all of it may reach your bloodstream; some might be broken down in the stomach or rejected by the intestines. The higher the bioavailability, the more of the drug is available for therapeutic action. This concept helps determine proper dosing and effectiveness of oral medications.
