Bill Masterton

Bill Masterton was a professional ice hockey player who played for the Minnesota North Stars. In 1968, he suffered a severe head injury during a game and tragically died days later, marking the first death of a player in NHL history. His injury highlighted the dangers of hockey and led to increased focus on player safety. In his memory, the NHL established the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, awarded annually to a player who exemplifies perseverance, dedication, and sportsmanship.
