bilirubin levels

Bilirubin is a yellow pigment produced when your body breaks down old red blood cells. It is normally processed by the liver and eliminated through bile. If the liver isn't functioning properly, or there’s an obstruction in the bile ducts, bilirubin can build up in the blood, leading to yellowing of the skin and eyes called jaundice. Different levels of bilirubin can indicate various issues, from harmless conditions to more serious liver diseases. Doctors measure bilirubin to assess liver health and diagnose potential problems related to red blood cell breakdown or liver function.
