Biliopancreatic Diversion
Biliopancreatic diversion (BPD) is a type of weight-loss surgery designed for severe obesity. It involves removing a large part of the stomach and rerouting the digestive tract so that food bypasses a significant portion of the small intestine. This reduces how much food one can eat and decreases the absorption of calories and nutrients. The goal is to promote significant weight loss and improve obesity-related health conditions. Because it affects nutrient absorption, patients need lifelong vitamin and mineral supplementation to prevent deficiencies. BPD is usually considered for individuals with very high body mass index (BMI) when other treatments haven't worked.
