Beta-Secretase (BACE)
Beta-Secretase, also known as BACE, is an enzyme involved in producing amyloid beta peptides in the brain. These peptides can accumulate and form plaques associated with Alzheimer’s disease. BACE's role is to cut the amyloid precursor protein (APP), releasing amyloid beta fragments. Since excess amyloid beta is linked to the progression of Alzheimer's, scientists study BACE to develop drugs that inhibit its activity, aiming to reduce plaque formation and slow disease progression. Understanding BACE helps in research efforts to find treatments for neurodegenerative conditions related to amyloid buildup.
