Bessie Coleman

Bessie Coleman was a pioneering African American and Native American aviator born in 1892. She became the first Black woman to earn a pilot’s license in 1921, despite facing racial and gender barriers. Inspired by her love of flying and determination, she traveled to France to train, as such opportunities were unavailable in the U.S., and then performed flying stunts and gave public demonstrations. Coleman’s achievements broke racial and gender stereotypes in aviation, inspiring future generations of diverse pilots and advocating for racial equality. She is celebrated today as a trailblazer who soared beyond societal limitations.
