Bennett's Model of Intercultural Sensitivity
Bennett's Model of Intercultural Sensitivity describes how people experience and respond to cultural differences, progressing through six stages. It ranges from ethnocentric perspectives (viewing one’s own culture as central) to ethnorelative viewpoints (appreciating cultural differences). The stages include denial, defense, minimization, acceptance, adaptation, and integration. As individuals move along this continuum, they become more open-minded and comfortable with diversity, leading to better intercultural understanding and communication. The model helps highlight personal growth in intercultural competence, emphasizing the importance of empathy and flexibility in engaging with different cultures.
