Benedict Biscop

Benedict Biscop (c. 630–690) was a Northumbrian monks and abbot who played a key role in promoting learning and Christianity in early medieval England. He founded two important monasteries, Wearmouth and Jarrow, which became centers of religious life, education, and scholarship. Biscop was also influential in importing Christian manuscripts, artworks, and scholars from continental Europe, helping to preserve and spread knowledge during a period of transition after the fall of the Roman Empire. His efforts contributed significantly to the cultural and religious revival of Northumbria and the wider Christian world.
