Bends
Bends, also known as decompression sickness, occur when dissolved gases, mainly nitrogen, form bubbles in the blood and tissues as a diver ascends too quickly. These bubbles can block blood flow and cause symptoms like joint pain, dizziness, skin rashes, or even more serious issues like paralysis. The body absorbs nitrogen under pressure underwater, and safe ascent allows it to gradually leave the body. Rapid ascent prevents this process, increasing the risk of bubbles forming. Treatment typically involves recompression in a hyperbaric chamber to reduce bubbles and restore normal blood flow.
