Ben Ali (Zine El Abidine Ben Ali)

Zine El Abidine Ben Ali was the President of Tunisia from 1987 to 2011. He rose to power through a military coup and maintained control for over two decades. His rule was marked by economic development, but also by political repression, censorship, and corruption. In 2010, widespread protests inspired by the Arab Spring demanded greater freedoms and an end to his government. Facing escalating unrest, Ben Ali resigned in January 2011 and fled the country. His presidency is often associated with authoritarian governance and the eventual push for democratic reforms in Tunisia.
