Belgian religious history
Belgium's religious history is marked by its diverse and complex landscape, shaped by its location at the crossroads of Latin and Germanic Europe. Historically predominantly Roman Catholic, the country experienced periods of religious conflict, notably between Catholics and Protestants during the Reformation and subsequent wars. The 19th and 20th centuries saw secularization and coexistence of various faiths, alongside tensions between the Dutch-speaking Flanders and French-speaking Wallonia, influencing religious identity. Today, Belgium remains religiously diverse with Catholicism as the major tradition, but also hosts growing secular, Protestant, Muslim, and other communities, reflecting its multicultural, evolving society.
