Beauforts

Beauforts are a scale used to describe wind speed based on its effects on the environment and sailing conditions. Developed by Sir Francis Beaufort in the early 19th century, the scale ranges from 0 (calm) to 12 (hurricane) and offers descriptive terms like "breeze," "gale," or "storm" to communicate wind strength. Unlike direct measurements from anemometers, Beauforts rely on observable signs such as wave height, the movement of trees, or the feel of the wind, making it a practical way for sailors and meteorologists to assess wind conditions visually.
