Bear Denning Behavior

Bear denning behavior involves female bears seeking out a safe, insulated space—called a den—to give birth and raise their young during the winter months. During this period, known as hibernation, their metabolic rate and body functions slow down significantly, conserving energy when food is scarce. Moms typically prepare the den beforehand, often in caves or hollowed-out trees, and stay inside for several months until spring. The young bears are born blind and rely on their mother’s warmth and nourishment, gradually gaining strength until they are ready to leave the den and explore their surroundings.
