Battle of the Denmark Strait
The Battle of the Denmark Strait, fought on May 24, 1941, was a naval clash during World War II between the British Royal Navy and the German Kriegsmarine. The Germans aimed to attack Allied convoys supplying its northern fleet, but their surface fleet encountered the British battlecruisers HMS Repulse and HMS Hood. The Germans successfully sank HMS Hood and damaged HMS Prince of Wales, while losing the heavy cruiser USS Omaha. The battle demonstrated the risks of naval engagement between modern warships, highlighting the strategic importance of controlling sea routes and the evolving dominance of air power and submarines in wartime warfare.
