Battle of the Chesapeake
The Battle of the Chesapeake, fought in 1781, was a crucial naval confrontation during the American Revolutionary War. The French fleet, under Admiral de Grasse, blockaded the British fleet led by Admiral Hood near the Chesapeake Bay. This prevented the British from resupplying or reinforcing their forces at Yorktown, Virginia. The French victory cut off British support, enabling American and French troops to surround and eventually force the surrender of the British Army at Yorktown. This victory was pivotal in securing American independence.
