Battle of Syracuse

The Battle of Syracuse (415-413 BC) was a pivotal conflict during the Peloponnesian War, where Athens attempted to conquer the city of Syracuse in Sicily. Athenian forces aimed to expand their influence and resources but faced strong resistance from Syracuse, which was supported by Sparta. The Athenians underestimated their opponents and overextended themselves. Ultimately, the battle ended in a disastrous defeat for Athens, leading to significant losses in troops and ships. This failure weakened Athens considerably and shifted the balance of power in the war, contributing to the eventual decline of Athenian dominance in Greece.
