Battle of Sedgemoor
The Battle of Sedgemoor, fought in 1685, was the final engagement of the Monmouth Rebellion in England. It involved government forces led by the Duke of Monmouth trying to overthrow King James II. Monmouth's army, mostly poorly equipped, clashed with loyal royal troops near Sedgemoor in Somerset. The government side used superior tactics and numbers to win decisively, ending the rebellion. The victory established royal authority, but it also led to harsh punishments for the rebels, including executions. The battle is significant as it marked the last major uprising against the English monarchy and influenced subsequent political developments.
