Battle of Petersburg

The Battle of Petersburg was a prolonged Civil War siege from June 1864 to April 1865, in Virginia. Union forces aimed to cut off Confederate supply lines, especially the vital railroad leading to Richmond, the Confederate capital. The fighting involved trench warfare and attempts to control key strategic positions around Petersburg. Its fall in April 1865 led to the collapse of Confederate resistance and the eventual surrender of Robert E. Lee’s army, marking a turning point that brought the Union closer to victory and ending the war.
