Battle of Ascalon

The Battle of Ascalon took place in 1099 near the city of Ascalon (modern-day Gaza) during the First Crusade. Crusader forces, having captured Jerusalem, faced the Fatimid Muslim army trying to retake the city. Despite being exhausted and outnumbered, the Crusaders launched a surprise attack that defeated the Fatimids. This victory effectively ended the Crusaders’ campaign in the region, securing their hold on Jerusalem and establishing a Latin Christian presence in the Holy Land. The battle was significant for consolidating Crusader control and marking the culmination of their efforts to establish a new Christian kingdom in the Holy Land.
