Battle of Alcatraz
The Battle of Alcatraz occurred on January 6, 1946, when six inmates at Alcatraz Prison attempted to escape by overpowering guards, stealing weapons, and disabling security systems. The plan was to seize control, escape the island, and reach the mainland. However, the effort was quickly thwarted by correctional officers wielding machine guns, leading to a violent confrontation lasting hours. Three inmates and two officers were killed, and the surviving inmates were recaptured. The event highlighted the prison’s security challenges and remains a significant episode in the history of the infamous high-security facility.
