Batavia (shipwreck)

The Batavia was a Dutch merchant ship launched in 1628, part of the Dutch East India Company's fleet. It wrecked in 1629 off the coast of Australia’s Houtman Abrolhos Islands. The ship was carrying valuable cargo and settlers. After hitting a reef, it broke apart, and a tragic massacre followed when the ship’s commander and crew panicked, leading to mutiny and violence among survivors. Some passengers and crew managed to escape and were rescued months later. The shipwreck is notable for its historical significance, archaeological discoveries, and the dramatic tales of survival, treachery, and justice associated with its wreck.
