Basque history
The Basque region, located in areas of northern Spain and southwestern France, has a distinct cultural identity and language called Euskara, which is unrelated to surrounding languages. Throughout history, they maintained unique customs, often resisting outside domination. In the Middle Ages, they established powerful maritime and trading communities. Despite political pressures, the Basques preserved their traditions and language. In Spain, they gained a degree of autonomy, especially after Franco's dictatorship ended in 1975. Today, the Basque people cherish their heritage, maintain a strong sense of identity, and promote cultural and political rights within Spain and France.
