Basque Government in Exile
The Basque Government in Exile was the official government of the Basque Country that operated outside Spain after 1937, following the defeat of Basque independence pursuits during the Spanish Civil War. It was based primarily in France and aimed to represent Basque interests, preserve Basque culture, and seek international support for Basque autonomy and independence. The exile government continued its activities until democratic Spain restored regional autonomy in 1978, at which point the Basque Autonomous Government was reintegrated into Spain’s political system.
