Basque dialects

Basque dialects are regional variations of the Basque language (Euskara) spoken across different areas in northern Spain and southwestern France. These dialects include Biscayan, Gipuzkoan, Upper Navarrese, Lower Navarrese, and Labourdese. They differ in pronunciation, vocabulary, and some grammatical features, but are mutually understandable. Despite regional differences, speakers recognize and communicate in a shared Basque language, which has a standard form used in education and media to unify diverse dialects. The variations reflect the language’s rich history and geographic spread, contributing to its unique cultural identity.
