Basiliximab
Basiliximab is a medication used to prevent organ rejection after a transplant, such as a kidney or liver. It works by specifically targeting a part of the immune system called the IL-2 receptor on certain white blood cells, which play a key role in attacking the new organ. By blocking this receptor, basiliximab reduces the immune response, helping the body accept the transplanted organ and decreasing the risk of rejection. It is typically given as an infusion before and shortly after surgery, often alongside other immunosuppressive drugs.
