basilica plan

A basilica plan is a traditional architectural layout often used in large churches and cathedrals. It features a rectangular shape with a central nave (main hallway) flanked by side aisles, separated by columns. At one end, there's usually an apse—an semi-circular or polygonal space that houses the altar. The design provides a spacious, open interior suitable for accommodating many people and processions. Originating from ancient Roman public buildings, the basilica plan became popular in Christian church architecture for its clarity, functionality, and ability to focus attention toward the altar at the end.
