Basavanna, also known as Basava, was a 12th-century Indian philosopher, poet, and social reformer from Karnataka. He advocated for equality, criticizing caste discrimination and promoting devotion to a personal God, primarily Shiva. Through his poetry and teachings, he challenged oppressive social norms, emphasizing humility, honesty, and community service. Basavanna founded the Lingayat tradition, encouraging people to experience and worship God directly, without intermediaries like priests.
