Basal bodies

Basal bodies are small structures inside cells that serve as the organizing centers for cilia and flagella—tiny hair-like projections that help cells move or move fluids outside the cell. Located at the base of these projections, basal bodies are similar in structure to centrioles and act as a foundation for assembling cilia and flagella. They ensure proper formation and anchoring, enabling effective movement or fluid flow. Essentially, basal bodies are the cellular "roots" that support and coordinate the function of these motile projections, playing a vital role in cell movement and signaling.
