Barry C. Barish is an American physicist recognized for his crucial role in discovering gravitational waves—ripples in spacetime caused by massive cosmic events. He led the team that built and operated the Large Area Detector at the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO).
