Barmakids

The Barmakids were a prominent family in medieval Islamic history, particularly during the Abbasid Caliphate (8th to 9th centuries). They served as high officials and advisors to the caliphs, notably contributing to the administration and cultural development of the empire. The most famous Barmakid, Yahya al-Barmaki, helped foster the Golden Age of Islam through patronage of the arts and sciences. Their influence waned due to political strife, leading to their downfall when they were executed or imprisoned by the caliph Al-Ma'mun, reflecting the volatile nature of power in that era.
