Barbara Grutter

Barbara Grutter was involved in a notable U.S. Supreme Court case, Grutter v. Bollinger (2003), which addressed whether universities could consider race as a factor in admissions. Grutter, a white applicant, was denied admission to the University of Michigan Law School, which used a admissions policy that valued diversity. She challenged the policy, arguing it was racial discrimination. The Supreme Court ruled that the university's policy was permissible under the Constitution because it aimed to create a diverse student body and was narrowly tailored. This case clarified that affirmative action in college admissions is allowed if used appropriately.
