Banqiao Dam
The Banqiao Dam, located in China, was built to control flooding and provide hydroelectric power. In 1975, it failed dramatically after Typhoon Nina caused heavy rain, leading to a massive flood. The collapse released a huge amount of water, destroying nearby towns and causing the deaths of an estimated 30,000 to 200,000 people. The disaster highlighted the importance of proper engineering, safety measures, and understanding how natural events can impact infrastructure. It remains a significant case study in dam safety and disaster management.
