Balliol family
The Balliol family was a prominent medieval Anglo-Scottish noble lineage, best known for its ties to the Scottish throne during the 13th century. The most notable member, John Balliol, became King of Scots in 1292 after a disputed succession. His reign was marked by conflict with England, particularly under Edward I. The Balliols lost power after their defeat, leading to the rise of the Bruce family. Despite their decline, the Balliol name endures, notably through Balliol College, one of the colleges at the University of Oxford, which was founded in the early 13th century.
