balanomorpha

Balanomorpha is a subgroup of barnacles, which are small crustaceans that attach themselves permanently to surfaces like rocks, ships, and even animals. Members of Balanomorpha typically have a thick, shell-like outer covering and a specialized feeding appendage called a cirrus, which they use to filter plankton from the water. This group includes many of the common barnacles found in marine environments. They are characterized by their hard shell plates that can open and close, providing protection while allowing the barnacle to feed. Balanomorpha play important roles in marine ecosystems, especially in fouling communities and as part of the food chain.
