Baddeley and Hitch model

The Baddeley and Hitch model of working memory describes how we temporarily hold and manipulate information. It has three key parts: the phonological loop, which handles verbal and auditory info; the visuospatial sketchpad, for visual and spatial details; and the central executive, which directs attention and manages these systems. There's also the episodic buffer, integrating information across domains. This model explains how we multitask mentally—like talking and thinking about directions—by coordinating different types of short-term storage and control processes to support learning and everyday problem-solving.
