backstrap loom

A backstrap loom is a portable weaving device traditionally used by many indigenous cultures. It consists of two main parts: an anchor point (like a tree or post) and the weaver’s body, usually with a strap around the waist and a stick or bar at one end. The warp threads (lengthwise yarns) are stretched between these points, while the weaver passes weft threads (crosswise yarns) through to create fabric. The tension is controlled by the weaver’s body tension, making it adjustable and easy to carry. This simple, effective loom allows for intricate weaving while remaining lightweight and adaptable to different settings.
