Babington Plot
The Babington Plot was a 1586 conspiracy in England aimed at overthrowing Queen Elizabeth I and restoring Catholic rule. A group of Catholic rebels, led by Anthony Babington, planned to assassinate the Queen and help Catholic France or Spain take control. They communicated secretly using coded letters, but the plot was uncovered by Elizabeth’s spies. The interception revealed the conspiracy, leading to the arrest and execution of Babington and his co-conspirators. This event reinforced Elizabeth’s distrust of Catholics and ultimately contributed to stricter laws against Catholics in England.
