Azerbaijan Democratic Republic
The Azerbaijan Democratic Republic was a short-lived independent state established in 1918 after the collapse of the Russian Empire. It was the first democratic and secular republic in the Muslim world, characterized by efforts to modernize the country, establish a parliament, and promote education and cultural development. Despite its advancements, the republic faced challenges such as territorial disputes and external threats, leading to its reintegration into Soviet Russia in 1920. Nonetheless, it remains a symbol of national sovereignty and democracy in Azerbaijan’s history.
