Azawad
Azawad is a region in northern Mali, encompassing parts of the Sahara Desert and Sahel zone. Historically, it is inhabited mainly by Tuareg people, a nomadic ethnic group known for their distinct culture and language. In 2012, Tuareg rebels declared independence for Azawad, seeking self-rule amid Mali’s political instability. However, this declaration was not internationally recognized, and the area has experienced ongoing conflict involving various armed groups. Azawad’s status remains complex, with continued efforts for peace and stability, reflecting broader issues of regional autonomy, resource control, and cultural identity.
